Things to do in September 2023 in Salem, Oregon

Fall is in the air and we are ramping up for cool weather with events galore. Check it out —

The First Friday Art Walk aims to promote local businesses, emerging artists and engagement with our downtown community. Taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, it is a free, leisurely opportunity to explore the heart of Salem and discover new shops, artwork, crafters and more. Each month includes a variety of businesses offering specials, art to view, activities and more. Reinforcing the encouragement of participation, there is also a raffle. To take part, pick up a passport from any of the participating businesses and collect stamps from a number of locations. Then turn in your completed passport to enter a raffle to win a prize (usually a basket overflowing with items from all the participating businesses). Find all the details at facebook.com/SalemArtWalk.

Don Gavitte: Formal Observation — Don Gavitte is a Portland-based comedian who has been teaching high school history since 1991. On his 50th birthday in 2018, he thought trying stand-up comedy would make a better mid-life crisis than buying a motorcycle. This decision has led him to regular sets in some of Portland’s finest dive bars and he’s earned countless drink tickets telling jokes about being a dad, a teacher, and the most tender of modern lovers. Don regularly performs at the Broadway Comedy Club in NYC and was selected to be part of the 2022 Sixth City Comedy Festival in Cleveland. He also headlines and produces The Teacher Show which has sold out rooms all over the Pacific Northwest and is currently one of Willamette Week’s “must see” shows in Portland. Don lives in little blue house with his wife who obviously married low; their pet rabbit, Rupert, who is surprisingly soft, and his two children who are not honors students, but not super horrible either.

With a residency trying to figure out writing songs? Perhaps a high gloss, but busted life and ultimately a secessionist raising in Jackson, Ohio? No wonder Elle King is hotter than a pepper sprout. Even more than ZFG attitude, there’s the forthright attack on a life lived frayed at the edges and pulling at the scenes.
