October 1

More than 80 competitors from across the USA and Canada and as far away as Norway, Latvia and Czechia, will gather at the Slalom Skateboarding World Championships. Not only is this event the slalom world championships, it has also been designated as one of three qualifying events for the Team USA selection. One man and one woman (not already pre-qualified) will earn a golden ticket to compete at the World Skate Games 2024 in Rome, Italy. The event wraps Sunday, Oct 1 with Tight Slalom followed by an on-site award ceremony. See it for yourself and experience the excitement of a world championship – where you can cheer on at least two local competitors, too!

It’s Apple Palooza 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday, October 1, at Fordyce Farm, 7023 Sunnyview Rd NE. Celebrate the season with apple-themed activities and goods, including apple tasting, baked goods, cider, donuts and more.

October 2

Salem’s planners will take a fun approach to community planning with the second annual Planner Palooza, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 2, at Fork 40 Food Hall, 440 State St.

“As planners, we often interact with people when they want to build something on their property, or a development is proposed in their neighborhood,” Lisa Anderson-Ogilvie, Assistant Director of Community Development. “This event is an opportunity to engage with the community in a different way. We want to help people understand what planning is, while also just getting to know them. Planner Palooza is a celebration of planning, and planning is all about improving the community.”

October 3

Hallie Ford Museum of Art is celebrating its anniversary all month long. On Tuesday, October 3, enjoy free admission, plus cake and refreshments, plus at 12:30 p.m., join John Olbrantz, the Maribeth Collins Director the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, for a guided gallery talk through the exhibit: The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at 25: Highlights from the Permanent Collection.

October 4

Sip for a good cause at Wines & Vines Fundraiser for Assistance League of Salem Keizer, an evening of local wine tasting, silent-auction bidding, music, hors d’oeuvre and more with all proceeds benefiting Assistance League Salem-Keizer programs such as Operation School Bell, which provides new clothing and shoes to students; Operation Art Adventures, small grants for teachers interested in offering art projects in their classrooms; and Operation Bookshelf, which helpshomebound adult patrons received deliveries of library materials; and more.

October 5

Take in a night of hilarious improvised comedy and song all based on audience suggestions with Whose Live Anyway? Cast members Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops, Jeff B. Davis and Joel Murray will leave you gasping with the very witty scenes they invent before your eyes. Audience participation is key to the show so bring your suggestions and you might even be asked to join the cast onstage. All ages welcome, but some PG-13 language will be used during the performance.

October 5-6

Take in a viewing of ENGLAND, a senior thesis production by Tim Crouch. Two actors. Two short acts with two different styles. One enthralling evening! 

The grateful recipient of a heart transplant travels 4,000 miles to thank the widow of the donor and to present her with a very special gift. But much more than a life has been lost. Written and performed in art galleries, ENGLAND tells a compelling story for our times — a disturbing tale of transactions and translations, of culture and commerce, of one thing being placed inside another without thought for the consequences. Presented by two guides, this is a tour to the end of the world.

The Salem Public Library Book Sale is happening October 5 through 8 at 585 Liberty St SE. October 5 is Friends Night (with membership) from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.; October 6 and 7 are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and October 8 is $4 bag day from 12 to 4:30 p.m.

October 6

The First Friday Art Walk aims to promote local businesses, emerging artists and engagement with our downtown community. Taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, it is a free, leisurely opportunity to explore the heart of Salem and discover new shops, artwork, crafters and more. Each month includes a variety of businesses offering specials, art to view, activities and more. Reinforcing the encouragement of participation, there is also a raffle. To take part, pick up a passport from any of the participating businesses and collect stamps from a number of locations. Then turn in your completed passport to enter a raffle to win a prize (usually a basket overflowing with items from all the participating businesses). NYC Comedian Casey Balsham — You’ve seen her at various clubs all over the country and as a regular at New York Comedy Club and Gotham. You’ve heard her as the host of the Shady Shit Podcast on Dear Media. Casey has also been featured on Gotham Comedy Live, Lifetime, Tidal’s No Small Talk Series and in a Monistat commercial you can only find online. Her debut album “Son of a Barb” hit number one on the iTunes charts and can be streamed on Spotify and Pandora. She recently wrote and starred in a one-woman show called “Casey Balsham Does a Thing” and was the lead in the off-Broadway musical, HA! Queer Artists Series: 2SLGBTQIAP in Focus features Allan Hayton: Things Keep Happening, a virtual one-hour presentation with Q&A, 12 to 1 p.m. Friday, October 6. Click here to register.

In Things Keep Happening, Allan shares his coming-of-age story set amid a vibrant scene of colorful characters drawn from all over the world to Second Avenue in the 1970s oil boom Fairbanks, Alaska. Building off a recent performance with 2023’s Out North Fringe Festival in Anchorage, AK, Things Keep Happening delivers a series of semi-autobiographical stories, blended with otherworldly cultural narratives in Gwich’in Athabascan language. Allan’s deeply personal style of storytelling is evident across these stories of survival and overcoming.

Get a jumpstart on your holiday shopping at the Annual Handweavers’ Sale where you can buy a wide selection of unique, handcrafted gifts created by local textile artists. Shop for handwoven items ranging from scarves and towels to table linens, rugs, home decor and more. This event is an annual fundraiser for Willamette Heritage Center and Salem Fiberarts Guild. There will also be fiber art demonstrations.

October 7

Family Activity Day — Take in an afternoon of artmaking celebrating Hallie Ford’s 25th anniversary and create monoprints with artist and educator Sonia Allen using a real printing press; plus there will be mosaics and clay activities, and demonstrations and conversation with Grand Ronde tribal members and traditional weavers Stephanie Craig of Kalapuya Weaving and Consulting, LLC and her apprentice Dakota Zimmer. 

Following the activities artist Bobby Mercier (Grand Ronde) will perform a re-dedication of his work Hayash-Man, which was first dedicated at last year’s Family Activity event.

Spotlight Storytelling: Esther Stutzman — Experience a special storytelling performed by Esther Stutzman of the Kalapuya and Coos tribes highlighting the stories, music, and culture of the Kalapuya people for young listeners. Esther Stutzman is Coos and Komemma Kalapuya and is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz. Esther is a storyteller and history keeper. She tells only Coos and Kalapuya stories. Her grandmother told her that it was bad luck to tell other people or other tribes’ stories. Stories are regarded as private property, as are songs. She has thirteen stories she shares with the public. Some of her creation stories tell of the time when animals and people could talk together.

This is the first in a series of four Spotlight Storytelling events bringing the stories of diverse cultures and communities to Salem Public Library. Additional Spotlight Storytelling events are scheduled for November, December and January.

Chemeketa Community College’s Night of A Thousand Lights Series presents Katie Harman. In 2017, Katie began a search for the works and stories of hidden female composers. As she scaled mountains of research — all while heavily pursuing her own professional journey as a musician — she noticed patterns of struggle among female creatives throughout history and across genres. ​Virtuosa Society is an innovative membership-based collective of female creatives across genres and levels of experience. Purpose-driven networking between creatives, access to collaborative opportunities, and awareness + celebration of important female creators from throughout history serve as the three mission pillars of Virtuosa Society.

October 10

The Immigrant Story Live — Hear four compelling first-person tales of courage, fortitude and resilience in the face of daunting challenges. The event kicks off at 7 p.m. with a musical performance featuring Martin Zarzar on guitar and percussion, Randy Porter on piano and Mario Diaz on guitar. From 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., storytellers from Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Indonesia share their stories about the social and political difficulties that caused them to leave their homelands, and the journeys that brought them to the United States.

Get out and dance at the Pan Celtic Ceili, featuring music and dance from across Ireland, Scotland, Wales and more. Céilí of the Valley Society welcomes musicians D’n’A (Doug & Amey) and callers Elisa, Shannon & Harry for this no-experience, no-partner-needed event. Even if you are not a dancer, you can do it. But really, the music alone is worth it! Doors open at 7 p.m. followed by a short dance lesson and live music from 8 to 11. All dances are taught before the live music begins. Classic Albums Live performs Pink Floyd: The Wall — Classic Albums Live takes the greatest albums and recreates them live on stage – note for note, cut for cut, using the best musicians. “Think of it as a recital,” says founder Craig Martin, “these albums are historic and stand the test of time.” Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic Albums Live has found success in concentrating solely on the music. “We don’t dress up or wear any sort of costume. Halloween Costume Swap — People in the US throw away 32 billion pounds of textiles and clothing every year. An estimated 12 million pounds of that waste is made up of Halloween costumes. The Halloween Costume Swap is an attempt to provide our community with an alternative to purchasing a Halloween costume that will likely only be worn once. 

Find new-to-you costumes for the whole family at this free event. You do not need to bring a costume in order to take one home with you. There will also be coffee for purchase, face painting, hand clothes mending lessons and more. Note: Costumes and costume accessories can be donated prior to the event during business hours at Salem Public Library Main or West Salem Branch and City of Keizer Civic Center.

Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope and support that aims to unite our communities and provide an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental health conditions have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about. Organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Oregon Chapter.

Watercolors Made Easy: Autumn — Learn to paint watercolor is in no experience needed class. A line drawing of the trees will be already on the watercolor paper and students only need to paint with watercolors. He was a main cast member on VH1’s Best Week Ever He created and starred in a pilot for Comedy Central starring opposite Parker Posey and made two seasons of the Comedy Central digital series Ya Killin’ Me! He currently hosts the podcast Get Rich Nick. Last year he won a car on the Price is Right and is happy to give you some tips to get on the show.

The Samhain Celtic New Year Festival is a celebration of all things Celtic featuring music, dance, performances, vendors, workshops and more. This year’s headline performers are the Two Rivers Ceili Band. It is organized by the Ceili of the Valley Society, a Salem-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and perpetuating Celt heritage and culture in the Willamette Valley primarily through social events that incorporate music and dance. An all-volunteer organization, the society teaches weekly classes and holds dances with live music on the second Friday of the month.

Chemeketa Community College’s Acclaimed Artist Series presents the Vienna Boys Choir. Boys have been singing at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel since 1296. In 1498, Maximilian I (HRR) moved his court to Vienna, lock, stock, and choir, thus founding the “Hofmusikkapelle” (Chapel Imperial), and the Vienna Boys Choir. Over the centuries, the Viennese Court attracted great musicians like Mozart, and Bruckner; Joseph Haydn, and Franz Schubert were themselves choir boys. Until 1918, the boys sang exclusively for the court. In the 1920s, the choir was reestablished as a private organisation. Since 1926, 2482 choristers have sung 1000 tours in 97 different countries.

World Ballet Series brings the magical world of Cinderella to life on stage this fall. Delgani String Quartet opens its ninth season with Dreams and Prayers, a concert featuring internationally-acclaimed clarinetist Wonkak Kim on Osvaldo Golijov’s The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind, a mystical epic inspired by Jewish music, history, and language. Delgani also performs Iranian composer Reza Vali’s newest musical Calligraphy, a work based on classical Persian modes, and Smetana’s autobiographical quartet, From My Life, which is rich with Czech melodies.

October 30

Salem Art Association (SAA) presents a special lecture by noted Portland artist Jeremy Okai Davis 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 30, at the Bush Barn Art Center, 600 Mission St SE. Jeremy has been featured on Oregon Art Beat and several regional and national publications and is represented by the Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland. 

SAA commissioned Jeremy to paint portraits of important early Oregon Black pioneers whose contributions to Oregon’s history have been overlooked. The most recent figures to join the collection are Sybil Harber (1856-1918) and America Waldo Bogle (1844-1913). The first two major figures from Oregon’s past selected were: Ben Johnson (1834-1901) and Beatrice Morrow Cannady (1889-1974). These commissioned portraits are now part of SAA’s Permanent Collection and are displayed in the Bush House Museum.

In his lecture, Jeremy will be talking about his art practice, his process, and the reasons he selected Sybil and America for this commission and will answer questions from the audience after his presentation. Click here to RSVP.

The Nightmare Factory, Oregon’s longest-running haunted house, is going full steam this season. The Greenhouses transform for the Indoor Winter Market 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday October through mid-March at Wavra Farms and Nursery, 7882 Jordan St SE, where vendors will sell what they make, grow or raise. Rotating schedule of more than 30 vendors each week.


The Minto Island Growers Farm Stand is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in October. Watch for a large selection of their fresh, organic produce, flowers and food/beverage options, plus…soup! A local chef will be serving soups made from Minto ingredients that can be enjoyed onsite or taken home. Plus beer/wine/cider bar will also be open each Saturday.
