Things to do in August 2023 in Salem, Oregon

We may be halfway through summer but there’s no end to the summertime fun. Here’s a look at things to do during August in Salem. Check it out —

August 1

String & Shadow present Ship of Fools: A Giant Puppet Odyssey — In it, three mimes set sail from the Port of Styx across the mythical boundary waters connecting the world of the living to the underworld. Aboard a mysteriously sentient ship, they encounter a world of beautiful and strange creatures: hermit crabs carrying houses on their backs, a ghostly humpback whale, and much more. Under layers of colorful fabric and dancing cardboard, Ship of Fools deals with themes of loss and acceptance, depicting a wondrous unknown and speaking to the power of friendship and love. It is brought to life by 3 mimes, 3 musicians, and 6 puppeteers.

String and Shadow is a performance company based out of Olympia, Washington. Using paper-mache, cardboard, bamboo and cloth (among many other found & recycled materials) String and Shadow creates incredible giant puppets and masks and weaves them into spectacle performances for all ages.

Minto’s food and beverage service will be open, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and throughout the performance.
When: 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 1

Puppeteers for Fears Presents Cthulu: The Musical! — A rock’n’roll retelling of the horror classic “The Call of Cthulhu,” performed entirely with puppets written by Josh Gross, and directed by Katy Curtis, starring Forest Gilpin, Alex Giorgi, Hunter Prutch, Alyssa Mathews, and Jake Raiter and featuring live music from The Elephant.

Detective LaGrasse is searching for a murderer. Francine Thurston’s uncle vanished. The only clue to both mysteries is a bizarre statue worshiped by a nightmarish cult. And it’s leading both of them out to sea, toward a mysterious island from their nightmares—and toward insanity. But, you know, with singing puppets.

Puppeteers for Fears, Oregon’s premier rock’n’roll puppet troupe, presents an original show that, in a sensible universe, would be impossible: a feature-length musical comedy adaptation of one of the least musical or comedic stories ever: H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror classic, The Call of Cthulhu—performed entirely with puppets, and a live band.

See noir detectives, dancing tentacles, anarchist pirates, broken-hearted academics, sassy monsters, and more, as they sing and dance their way to love, madness, and possibly the end of the world.

Oregon State Fair presents Bush — For as much as life seems like survival of the fittest, it really comes down to survival of the most perseverant. In this game, dogged determination trounces any other skill or advantage. Ultimately, the most unwavering get out alive. BUSH embody this steadfast spirit. After three decades, well over 20 million records sold, a GRAMMY® Award nomination, 1 billion streams, and a procession of #1 hits, the multiplatinum quartet — Gavin Rossdale [vocals, guitar], Chris Traynor [guitar], Corey Britz [bass], and Nik Hughes [drums]—stand tall as rock outliers whose imprint only widens as the years pass. Turn on rock radio, and it won’t be long before you hear “Glycerine” or “Machinehead.” On the big screen, their music courses through blockbuster franchises such as John Wick. On the road, they regularly pack amphitheaters and ignite festival stages. As indefatigable as ever, they’re still here too, which brings us to their ninth full-length offering, The Art of Survival [BMG].

Oregon State Fair presents Justin Moore — Never been one to follow the pack, this multi-platinum, chart-topping country star left Nashville behind for the simple pleasures of small-town life. Moore’s built his remarkable career playing by his own rules, eschewing trends and spotlight-chasing in favor of an honest, old-school approach. It makes perfect sense, then, that he’d call his captivating new album Stray Dog. Mature and nuanced, the collection showcases Moore at his most self-assured, tapping into the raw energy of his live show as he delivers poignant stories of desire and commitment, heartbreak and regret, joy and celebration. Sure, there’s plenty of good time anthems here, but Stray Dog is ultimately a powerful work of reflection from an artist who’s grown to understand himself on a deeper level than ever before, one who’s willing to engage in the hard work that comes with building not just a career, but a life of meaning and purpose.
When: 7:30 p.m. Monday, August 28. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
