On an ordinary day in a small college town, a storm strikes and leaves destruction in its wake. In its aftermath, a group of friends unites at a cabin in the woods to discover, “When the water is over your head, who can pull you up?”

In the Deep is a new musical about friendship, family, and surviving in unknown torrents. Written and directed by three generations of Willamette University alumni. Directed by Carly Christensen ’16

Henry Rollins: Good to See You Tour — Henry faithfully recounts the events of his life in the brief pre-COVID period since the last tour and when things got even stranger over the last several months. It’s been an interesting time to say the least and he’s got some great stories to tell.

El Ranchero hosts After Hours “Noche de Muertos (Night of the Dead)” 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. November 2. There will be a live DJ, and special food and drink menu. Wear a costume for a chance to participate in their raffle.

U S O Show is a musical revue comprised of patriotic songs of hope and remembrance. This moving celebration will serve as a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who have served, and who continue to serve in the armed forces. Expect a beautiful, fun-filled evening of great music from some of Pentacle’s finest. Directed by Jeff Witt.

November 3

The First Friday Art Walk aims to promote local businesses, emerging artists and engagement with our downtown community. Taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, it is a free, leisurely opportunity to explore the heart of Salem and discover new shops, artwork, crafters and more. Each month includes a variety of businesses offering specials, art to view, activities and more. Reinforcing the encouragement of participation, there is also a raffle. To take part, pick up a passport from any of the participating businesses and collect stamps from several locations. Then turn in your completed passport to enter a raffle to win a prize (usually a basket overflowing with items from all the participating businesses). Queer Artists Series: 2SLGBTQIAP In Focus: eboni wyatt – In this artist talk and discussion, film photographer and zine-maker, eboni wyatt (they/them) discusses their project, “coming home.” This talk will examine their photo zine completed in 2022, executed in color and black/white film photography and prose, that inspired their introspective creative practice and process. eboni will share anecdotes about their life, identity and expression as a Black, queer, nonbinary artist. Sorry Not Sorry is a standup showcase featuring women, LGBTIQIA+ and POC comics, hosted by hilarious Portland comedians Julia Corral, Eliza Butler and Marietje Hauprich.

Quiltopia returns! This quilt show and benefit sale displays and celebrates the history and culture of quilting; as well as the talents and creativity of quilt artists. The 2023 theme is “Sew Happy Together” and features special guest artist, Erica Jackman of Kitchen Table Quilting. Activities for the two-day event include quilt displays, raffles, artist vendors, a guest artist workshop, and the Re-stash Boutique where visitors may purchase fabrics and quilt supplies. This event is a fundraiser for Helping Hands Resources of Salem.

North Salem High School Theatre presents Chicago — In roaring twenties Chicago, aspiring night club performer Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap… until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune, and acquittal.

Content Advisory: While most language and sexual references have been removed in this Teen Edition, the performance may not be suitable for young audiences. There are moments of pantomimed violence and adult situations that underscore the satirical nature of Chicago and the production’s themes of celebrity, fame, and greed. Recommended age: 13 and up.

Discover Chemeketa’s Planetarium — Since 1977, Chemeketa’s Planetarium has offered astronomy presentations in a theater seating 60 people under a 35-foot dome where realistic images of stars, planets, sun and moon are projected onto the ceiling for visitors to study and enjoy. The current show is Phantom of the Universe: The Hunt for Dark Matter showcasing an exciting exploration of dark matter, from the Big Bang to its anticipated discovery at the Large Hadron Collider. The show reveals the first hints of its existence through the eyes of Fritz Zwicky, the scientist who coined the term “dark matter.” From there, it journeys across space and time to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, speeding alongside particles before they collide in visually stunning explosions of light and sound, while learning how scientists around the world are collaborating to track down the constituents of dark matter.

Chemeketa Community College’s Acclaimed Artist Series presents the Roomful of Teeth, a Grammy-winning vocal band dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice. By engaging collaboratively with artists, thinkers, and community leaders from around the world, the group seeks to uplift and amplify voices old and new while creating and performing meaningful and adventurous music.

Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife Art Show & Contests – Stop by this afternoon art show at the Bush Barn Art Center from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 4. During the ODFW art show, approximately 60 entries from the three different contests (Habitat Conservation stamp, Waterfowl stamp, and Upland Game Bird stamp) will be displayed, and the winners of the 2024 contests will be announced.

Sonic Arts Ensemble — One concert stage. Acoustic instruments. Microphones. Electronic sound machines. Colorful lighting. And lots of things unfamiliar. Willamette Music students and faculty fuse live electronics and instrumental performance into an expansive and unconventional experience. Join John Olbrantz, the Maribeth Collins Director of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, for a lecture celebrating the museum’s 25th anniversary, in conjunction with The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at 25: Highlights from the Permanent Collection exhibition. Learn about the museum’s rich and colorful history; the development of its diverse and impressive permanent collection, which includes over 11,000 objects ranging from ancient art to modern masters; its history of world-class exhibitions, dynamic education programs, and scholarly publications; some of the key individuals who have guided and supported the museum over the past twenty-five years; and its prospects for the future.

Dreaming Deeper: A Who’s Who of Groundbreaking Gardeners with Tom Fischer
Tom Fischer, the recently retired acquisitions editor at Timber Press, a leading garden publisher, has written for Horticulture, Gardens Illustrated, Martha Stewart Living, and other notable periodicals. In 2017, he received the B.Y. Morrison Communication Award from the American Horticultural Society. Tom’s presentation will introduce us to the work of an array of important figures who have transformed garden design throughout the history of the field. He will touch on what their unique accomplishments have to teach us today. Guests are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. to mingle and enjoy light refreshments prior to the lecture scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Get out and dance at the Second Friday Céilí, featuring live music by Portland Irish-trad band Na Rósaí and dances called by Bruce Kenny. No experience or partner is needed. Pianist Greg Lief and the Cherry City Quartet will provide a Musical Journey through Chopin and Ravel 2 p.m. Sunday, November 12 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem, (UUCS), 5090 Center St NE.

Greg Lief has been playing the piano since the age of four. His acoustic piano
repertoire is split between ragtime (Scott Joplin) and classical (Beethoven,
Chopin, Clementi, Debussy, Mozart). He has also written, performed, and
recorded several hundred original pop/rock compositions. The Cherry City Quartet is a group of four high school musicians on cello, viola and violins. They are performing Ravel’s Quartet in F Major.

Cost is $20/person (suggested donation). This is a benefit concert for UUCS.

November 11-12

The Willamette Master Chorus kicks off its 39th concert season its 19th Annual Veterans Concert, a review of popular music from the 70’s and 80’s with a combo of musicians and featuring guest soloist, Marilyn Keller. Musical highlights include songs by Fleetwood Mac, Burt Bacharach, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. The chorus will be joined by the fifth Annual WMC High School Honor Choir. Patriotic anthems and service hymns will be sung to honor the various branches of the US military.

Tour the Elsinore — Immerse yourself in the history, art and architecture of the Elsinore Theatre in a tour highlighting “The Showplace of The Willamette Valley.” Go behind the scenes to discover the layers of history embedded in this 97-year-old icon of downtown Salem. Learn about the making of the theater and its classic Gothic “nave and aisle” design. Admire the artisan, stained glass, the scenic storytelling murals, and the grand proscenium arch which rises 40 feet above the floor of the auditorium and features 37 Gothic panels. The Fanciest 5K. Ever. — Run in your fanciest duds with your fanciest buds to raise money and awareness for local survivors of sex trafficking. This is a recreational, fun, community race where everyone participating runs in formal wear from fancy dresses to tuxedos to top hats and tiaras. Money raised supports Safety Compass, a local organization that provides free, confidential advocacy for sex-trafficking survivors in the mid-Willamette Valley. Jazz Collective and Willamette Singers will play a free, everyone-welcome concert 7:30 p.m.  Thursday, November 16 in Rogers Rehearsal Hall at Mary Stuart Rogers Music Center, Willamette University.


The Bartow ProjectJoin Curator of Indigenous Art Rebecca Dobkins for an evening of short films about Wiyot artist Rick Bartow (1946-2016). Each film was made with the support of the Wiyot Tribe and Dell’Arte International, a theater workshop and school in northern California. Each of the three films take a different approach to storytelling: one employs a documentary style, another is an animated short that liberally draws on Bartow’s imagery, and the third is a symbolic homage to Bartow’s relationship with his wife, artist Julie Swan.  Together, the films introduce viewers to the complex work and life of one of Oregon’s most revered artists, whose art is central to the collection of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.

Nouveau Release Party — Join Chemeketa Cellars and other local wineries (plus a bonus authentic French Nouveau!) pouring nouveau and gamay varietals in celebration of this famous French holiday. Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay in the Beaujolais region of France to celebrate the end of harvest. Nouveau is traditionally released on the third Thursday of November every year at festive release parties and is meant to be consumed immediately after bottling.  Tickets include tastings of Nouveau from local wineries and our student-made Nouveau along food pairings and live music by jazz trio UpFront Band. Mingle with Wine Studies students and local wineries pouring Nouveau and Gamay wines, learn about the Nouveau tradition, and enjoy a relaxing evening of lively jazz, lovely Nouveau and luscious light bites.

Empty Bowls — Artists from the Willamette Art Center and throughout the community create over 1,500 bowls each year to be sold at this annual benefit sale for Marion Polk Food Share (MPFS). In the past seven years, Empty Bowls has raised over $170,000 to benefit MPFS and the people they serve.

The Willamette Art Center (WAC) offers art classes and workshops, studio space for artists, and more. The WAC operates as the public face of the Friends of the Visual Arts which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving our community through art and art access — they are a place to learn and grow in the arts

Bush House Museum Mini-Concert – Join us on November 18 for an intimate concert with Amenta Abioto. She is a singer, songwriter, producer, and performance artist from Memphis, TN, who now lives in Portland. In her one-woman show, Amenta builds vocal and instrumental loops from kalimba, synthesizer, drum machine, and guitar creating atmospheric textures. Watercolors Made Easy: Silver Falls in Autumn — Learn how to paint watercolors in a step-by-step class while painting Silver Falls with an autumn tree. No drawing or painting experience is needed for this class. A line drawing of the waterfall and tree will be already on the watercolor paper and students only need to paint with watercolors. Instructor Elizabeth Zimmerman of Western Rose Studios will demonstrate different watercolor painting techniques and she will be available for one-on-one help as time allows.

Céili of the Valley Society hosts weekly social dance classes 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, at the VFW Hall, 630 Hood St NE. No experience or partner is needed. Dances walked first so you can learn the steps, then called so you don’t have to worry about remembering everything right from the start. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
