First Tuesday Music & Poetry Open Mic — Musicians, poets, bands, and performers of all kinds are invited to take the stage during this monthly open mic night. Hosted by Matador Hamilton and Danny Shaw of Giantess, the evening welcomes both seasoned performers and first-timers ready to share their work. 7 p.m., recurring on the first Tuesday of the month in Salem’s Historic Grand Ballroom. City of Salem’s Natural Resources Planner Jeff Johnson and Park Ranger Mike Zieker will share their knowledge of our local bald eagle population and their efforts to monitor the nests on Minto Island, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 3 in Anderson Rooms at Salem Main Library, 585 Liberty St SE. Salem Folklore Community Contra Dance features traditional American folk dancing with live music and experienced callers. No experience or partner needed. Summer Celebration — An afternoon of ice cream, games, entertainment, and summer fun returns with the feel of a neighborhood block party mixed with a classic school carnival. Expect activities, music, family-friendly surprises, and plenty of reasons to hang around for a while. Traveling Wheelz rolls into the season with its “Bring on the Summer Night” all-ages open skate. Voices of Connection with Bryan Hopkins — Music and advocacy come together during this benefit concert supporting Aphasia Relearned, a nonprofit focused on helping people living with aphasia reconnect with communication and community. Bryan Hopkins of Elvis Monroe is joined by Jason Carter (Frank Black, Grand Duchy), Silver Sorensen (Softcore, Kiefer Sutherland), and Josh Schroeder (Sleep Millennium, Thousand Echos). Doggie Dash brings animal lovers together for a pet-friendly walk/run and festival supporting Oregon Humane Society. Confluence: Willamette Valley LGBT Chorus kicks off Pride Month with Building Community: Loud and Proud, a concert centered on identity, solidarity, and celebration. The program highlights songs about self-worth, connection, and the strength found in community, bringing together LGBTQIA+ voices and allies through music. Chemeketa Community College’s Safe Haven is kicking off Pride Month with a free screening of Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Elite Manhattan drag queens Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) impress regional judges in competition, securing berths in the Nationals in Los Angeles. When the two meet pathetic drag novice Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo) — one of the losers that evening — the charmed Vida and Noxeema agree to take the hopeless youngster under their joined wing. Salem Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge starts Tuesday, June 9. Earn rewards and chances at prizes by signing up and tracking the time you spend reading or listening to books. The library also offers a listening club for pre-readers and their parents to encourage the continued development of early literacy skills that babies, toddlers and preschoolers need in order to become readers. Salem Service Day — Formerly called Public Works Day, this family-friendly event features employees and activities from many citywide departments. Powerhouse Sunset Yoga — An evening yoga flow meets sweeping hillside views during this all-levels sunset class led by Meg Boyd of Powerhouse Hot Yoga. Salem Summer Solstice 5k & 10k Run — Celebrate the start of summer with an evening run hosted by Willamette Valley Road Runners. The race welcomes runners, walkers, and strollers, with routes beginning and ending near the pavilion at Parking Lot #3. Once the finish line is crossed, participants can cool down with an ice cream sundae under the pavilion. Take in a night of roller skating with two performances by Salem’s own Drag Queens and Kings (first show at 8:30 p.m., second show at 9:30). This is an 18+ event. June 12-14

Belly Dancer USA returns to Salem to showcase dancers from around the country. The weekend event includes a competition, dance lessons, clothing and jewelry vendors, and a Saturday night gala show. One of the instructors and performers is internationally renowned Lebanese Simon who will offer workshops on Raq Sharki dance technique and combinations and Dabke, a folkloric dance. He will headline the Gala Show, which will also include reigning Belly Dancer USA champion Kaira, Amel Tafsout, and Thorn Trinity, 8 p.m. Saturday, June 13. The Belly Dancer USA portion of the competition begins at 8 p.m. Sunday. The winner will be crowned at 9 p.m. The gala show, weekend competition and shopping are open to the public. Explore an exhibit in the museum home about Lord and Schryver during Gaiety Hollow Open Gardens, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 13 at 545 Mission St. SE. Admission is free, but donations supporting the preservation and care of Gaiety Hollow are encouraged. The Willamette Heritage Center, Oregon Black Pioneers and Just Walk Salem Keizer host In Freedom’s Footsteps: Juneteenth Community Walking Tour. This annual walk follows the footsteps of a local family whose lives were impacted by slavery and emancipation. Arrive 15 minutes early for the intro video about the family and history of Juneteenth and Emancipation Day Celebrations in Salem and Oregon.  Guided walks are capped at the first 50 people each and will leave the museum at 9, 10, 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Brochures for a self-guided walk are available, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 19. The 2.25-mile walk begins and ends at the Willamette Heritage Center, 1313 Mill St SE. The walk is free, but donations are welcome to support future walks and the research that goes into making these events possible.

The Blackening — This laugh-out-loud horror comedy centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Salem Cinema presents a Reel Change For Our Community screening of 1776, a musical drama adapting the Broadway play, depicting the political struggle within the Continental Congress to sign the Declaration of Independence. Tuesdays

Tuesdays at Bryn Mawr are about tacos and tunes. Each week, June through August, welcomes a different local musician and Ricky’s Taco Truck for an evening of wine, music, and delicious food. Taco Tuesdays return for the summer with Chef Reyes bringing rotating taco specials to the grill each week. Grilled chicken and carne asada favorites share the menu with new creations, all served alongside house-made salsa and guacamole. 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Coria Estates, 8252 Redstone Ave SE. Ceili of the Valley hosts weekly classes that invite dancers of all experience levels to join, learn, and have fun. Each dance is walked through and called, making the class approachable for beginners, families, and anyone curious about Celtic dance traditions. No partner is needed, and the atmosphere leans more welcoming and community-focused than formal. 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at VFW Hall, 630 Hood St. NE. $5, with the first class free for new dancers. Click here for more info. 

Wednesdays

Gaiety Hollow hosts Open Gardens, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Wednesday through September at 545 Mission St SE. Gaiety Hollow is the home, garden and studio of Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver. The Lord and Schryver Conservancy purchased Gaiety Hollow in 2015 and has since restored the garden to its period of significance. The property is listed on the National Historic Register.  Learn more here.


Salem Community Markets organizes a Mini Farmers Market, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays through September at Chemeketa Community College’s Agriculture Building off 45th Ave. Open to the public.


Bricked Up Comedy is a weekly comedy open mic. Sign-ups open at noon the day of the open mic. To sign up, fill out the form here. All ages are allowed until 10, but material will not necessarily be clean. Sets are 5 minutes. Free but two item minimum for audience members and comics. 8 p.m. Wednesdays in the Brick Room at The Grand Theatre. Click here for info.


Bring a book, journal, sketch pad, board game, or puzzle, and take a break during Analog Hour, 4 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday at Noira, 285 Liberty St NE, Suite 135. $10 of select wine pours and snacks. Click here for reservations 

Thursdays

Salem Community Markets organizes a Mini Farmers Market, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursdays through September at Edgewater St W between Kingwood and Gerth. Open to the public.


Salem Poetry Project continues on a weekly basis. Each week will present a featured reader followed by the Infamous Open Mic: 3 poems or five minutes whichever is first. Featured reader begins at 7:00 and the open mic will directly follow, at the Bush Barn Annex, 600 Mission St SE.
