A global celebration, Make Music Day aims to bring the community together through our common connections with music, whether playing or listening. Born from Fete de la Musique, which originated in France in 1982, Make Music Day has since grown to have an international calling. Salem is one of more than 1000 cities around the world celebrating Make Music Day. It’s an opportunity for Salem to showcase our music, our venues and our city.
This year welcomes approximately 150 musical performances and more than 40 host venues. From professional musicians to people who have never picked up an instrument. Individuals to large bands. All ages and all musical genres join in this global celebration.
All performances are in-person, outdoors and free to all attendees.
Hear the Oregon Symphony at the newly constructed Gerry Frank Amphitheater in Riverfront Park (11:30 a.m.) followed by Sprague High School Orchestra (12:30 p.m.).
Catch the Orgelkids USA Pipe Organ Bike in a bike lane near you (2:00 p.m.).
Experience DJ Sticky Soundwavves outside Caakes Unlimited, where there will also be a graffiti exhibition, skateboarding and the live creation of a temporary mural led by Eddie X Caine in partnership with Salem Art Association. (12 to 6 p.m.)
The day also includes special mass appeal music events such as bucket drumming, ukulele jam, harmonica give-away and play-along, found-sound alley, kazoo giveaway, jumbie jams (steel pan drum) experience — all of which welcome audience participation.
Festivities conclude with a Silent Disco, the official event after party happening in Electric Alley, the alley between Frontier Barbershop and Court St. Dairy Lunch. Bring your cell phone and headphones. It’s easy to join — Use the TuneIn Radio app for easy access to 105.5 FM The Moon, KMUZ 88.5 FM and 100.7 FM where there will be a stream of dance tunes.
Whether you want to play music or help make music happen, it’s easy to get involved, and as an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organized event, all help is needed and appreciated. Visit the Make Music Salem website for details.
Make Music Salem takes place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 21 throughout the city. There is no cost to attend or participate. Check out the full schedule of performers, at www.makemusicsalem.org.
