September in Salem welcomes art, music and more, plus these other highlights.

September Highlights

Yoga & Beer (Yoga & Wine) are offering a host of classes all month long. Visit their website to check out when and where.

World Beat Gallery has officially reopened and there’s still time to experience their “Windows to Japan: A Glimpse of Japanese Culture.” Visit 11 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday through Friday at Pringle Park Plaza, 390 Liberty St SE.

September 4

First Friday Art Walk is happening 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 4, in Downtown Salem. Stroll the downtown Salem streets while enjoying local art and complimentary refreshments! Each participating shop will be offering art and/or a sample beverage of their choice. For more info click here.

September 5

There’s a Fall Pottery Sale happening 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 5, at 555 Winter St NE that aims to raise funds to support Willamette Art Center. Check it out, grab a piece of art and support a good cause, too.

Take in a night of rock, jazz, country and blues when the Leanne McClellan Band performs live 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 at Ankeny Vineyard. Call 503-378-1498 or email info@ankenyvineyard.com to make your reservation. 

Pucker up at the Smooch Your Pooch Kissing Booth fundraiser 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Willamette Valley Hospice grounds, 1015 Third St NW. Artist Brigitte Miller is sharing her Kissing Booth for photos, and collecting freewill donations for the Walk-n-Wag (see below). This will be a safely distanced event, with people smooching their own dogs, or the dogs of their friends/family, and lots of wipes and hand sanitizer available. People do not have to be registered for the Walk-n-Wag to participate, and all will be entered into the door prize drawing.

September 6

Take in Jazz Fest with Louis Pain and special guests 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday, September 6, at Kathken Vineyards, 5737 Orchard Heights Rd NW. Age: 21 and older. Cost: $15 plus online ticket fees. Tickets available at the gate unless sold out.

Take in a musical tour to Cuba, México, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Brazil, Spain, and the USA with Pachanga 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at Cubanisimo Vineyards. Get more info here.

September 7

September 8 and beyond

Willamette Heritage Center, 1313 Mill St SE, is closed until Tuesday, September 8, when the Center will reopen with new hours and services. Beginning Sept. 8, the site and its retail partners will be open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Other things to note, while you can visit museum grounds, access to the exhibits in the historic houses and mill will require a timed admission ticket. Entrance tickets are for self-guided tours and are limited to Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10 am and 4 pm. Tickets must be purchased one week in advance and are available on the Center’s website

Additionally, due to social distancing guidelines and reduced staff, the WHC Research Library is closed to drop-in visitors. Public can access collections through appointments, email and some new fee-for-service options. Learn more here.

September 9

RiverCity Rock Star Academy is hosting In Person Open Mic Night 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, at RiverCity Rock Star Academy, 2769 19th St. SE. Social distancing protocols will be followed. Bring your own masks and chairs.

September 10 

Willamette Valley Hospice hosts Reflections on the River virtually this year 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Sept. 10. This free community celebration, for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one will include a 45-minute program broadcast on Willamette Valley Hospice’s website. Reflections on the River features shining luminarias with spoken words of inspiration and family testimonials, honors veterans and remembers those who have passed due to COVID-19 with a glowing tribute on the Willamette Queen Sternwheeler. If you would like to particpate, you can purchase a personalized luminaria for $10 to honor your loved ones at wvh.org. Proceeds from this event benefit Willamette Valley Hospice’s Bereavement Services programs that provide community grief support groups for children and families, grief counseling for the families of those under our hospice care, and summer activities for youth. September 12

Acoustic guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Mitch Lies brings his Americana sound to Beehive Station 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, September 12. Lies plays a variety of genres, including blues, country, folk-rock and more. 

POSTPONED 2020 Governor’s Arts Awards hosts a Virtual Celebration 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 12. Oregon Poet Laureate Anis Mojgani will perform during the ceremony. Oregon’s highest honor for exemplary service to the arts, the Governor’s Arts Awards recognizes and honors individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the arts in Oregon. The 2020 Governor’s Arts Award recipients are Darrell Grant, a jazz musician and educator from Portland; Roberta J. Kirk, a traditional artist and educator from Warm Springs; John Laursen, a writer, designer, editor and typographer from Portland; Toni Pimble, the founding artistic director of the Eugene Ballet; and Portland Gay Men’s Chorus in Portland. Miss Smith presents Aurora Sherman in her fourth fundraising concert “Love Wins at the Border: Hold On” 2 p.m. Saturday, September 12. All proceeds from this livestream will benefit Immigrant Families Together. The program is diverse, highlighting female composers and composers of color, and appropriate for all ages. September 12 and 26

Lord & Schryver Conservancy hosts Open Gardens at ​Gaiety Hollow, ​545 Mission St. SE, twice in September. Visit between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sept. 12(canceled due to air quality) and/or 26 for a free self-guided tour to experience the gardens in bloom with a focus on zinnias. September 15-17

Kick-off the school year with something fun! Take part in the Free 3-Day Kids Science Challenge September 15-17, 2020. The Kids Science Challenge (led by award-winning chemistry professor Karen McFarlane Holman, Ph.D.) aims to engage elementary school-aged children and their families in hands-on science experiments in a live, interactive forum. Make potions bubble, marvel at optical illusions, and turn an egg inside-out without cracking the shell – and learn the science behind the transformations! The event will take place live via Zoom at 11 a.m. PST on September 15, 16 and 17. Can’t make the live show? All registrants have access to watch a replay of the video at your convenience. Because interaction is an important component of the Science Challenge, kids will be encouraged to share their results so that the whole group can collectively analyze and discuss the observations. Until September 17

The 8th annual Walk-n-Wag event aims to engage the pet- and people-loving community in new ways due to Covid19. This year, it’s getting unleashed as a virtual race for teams and individuals, with weeks of contests, virtual and live activities, and prizes. Walk-n-Wag raises funds to help hospice patients care for their pets through Willamette Valley Hospice’s Pet Peace of Mind® program. Help them reach their goal of 200 people, 20 million steps, and $20,000 by September 17. Register for $10 at wvh.org/pets.

September 19

The Ferenjis Are Back at Cubanisimo Vineyards 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 to play live music on the patio. Dancing encouraged! There will also be food trucks and wine specials. 

September 19 and 20

Home improvement, remodeling and design ideas await at the HBA’s Tour of Remodeled Homes 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20. The tour is an opportunity to check out the workmanship and design solutions from area remodelers. Cost is $10. Click here for tickets.
