Discover Chemeketa’s Planetarium
Since 1977, Chemeketa’s Planetarium has offered astronomy presentations in a 60-seat theater under a 35-foot dome where realistic images of stars, planets, sun and moon are projected onto the ceiling for visitors to study and enjoy. The current show, Ring World, is about Saturn, the true “Lord of the Rings.” After a seven-year journey from Earth, the two-story Cassini spacecraft began orbiting Saturn in July 2004. This mission of exploration ended in September 2017 following a successful close-up look at the planet and a final descent into it. Between 2004 and 2017, Cassini orbited Saturn 294 times. This full-dome presentation celebrates new images of Saturn as captured by Cassini over a 13-year period. It also includes a brief introduction to the nighttime sky over Salem.
