On Stage: A Little Night Music in Concert — April 29

Escape to the theater for a night of entertainment as Northwest Broadway Productions presents Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical, A Little Night Music, in a concert version featuring the Salem Orchestra, conducted by John Radosta, on stage.

Led by Artistic Director Stephen Mushaw, who directed A Christmas Story, Annie Get Your Gun, and Little Shop of Horrors at the Elsinore, the show features a variety of Willamette Valley talent including Lance Nuttman, Tracy Webber, Phoebe Jacobs and Alex Foufos, among others.

Set in 1900 Sweden, the musical was inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 film “Smiles of a Summer Night.” It has often been described as an operetta or light opera. Several love triangles are involved and untangled by the end of the play.

Providing music for the production is the Salem Orchestra, which aims to create and connect communities through diverse musical performances and educational outreach. The 30-piece orchestra was founded in 2018 and led by Artistic Director Christopher Noel and Executive Director Rochelle Rafn.

“Salem Orchestra is built on many beliefs: that arts are the heart of society and the soul of civilization; that Salem deserves, desires and will support its own, local-grown professional orchestra; that classical music is classic not by virtue of its age, but its timelessness; and that it has something unique and valuable to offer in the continued development of the community.”

A Little Night Music opened on Broadway in 1973 and received six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It features memorable songs like “Send In The Clowns” and “A Weekend In The Country.”

The show takes place 7 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Elsinore Theatre, 170 High St SE. Tickets are $28 to $38. Click here for tickets.

Due to mature themes, the show may not be suitable for children under age 10.
