Party Like It’s Y2K at Gilbert House for Grown-Ups on Aug 22

Are you 21 or older and looking to relive the turn of the millennium this summer?

Take this as a sign to register for Gilbert House for Grown-Ups Night at the Museum: Y2K Edition, the ultimate throwback night out, where you can expect guided crafting sessions (think shrinky-dinks and beaded keychains) and access to exhibits and play structures. If you’ve worked up an appetite after indulging in the various on-theme activities, there will be catered food and alcohol available, too.

Eight years ago, Salem’s beloved children’s museum, Gilbert House, opened its doors for adults, hosting elaborately themed evenings geared toward a different demographic than usual. The events offer Salem locals the chance to access their imagination, free of social expectations.

Promotions Coordinator Briana Lee handles everything from brand marketing to event planning, which is how she wound up overseeing rooms full of bubbles and outdoor playgrounds. Whether museum attendees are just learning to read or have full-time careers, Briana dedicates her days to curating an enjoyable and creative experience for all who enter. 

Since 1989, the museum has been an essential part of downtown, providing children the opportunity to learn through creative play. While the space is tailored specifically toward children’s intellectual development, the museum is a nostalgic destination for the adults of Salem, many of whom have personal memories of attending or taking children there. For this exact reason, Gilbert House has continued welcoming adults twice a year. 

“This gives adults the opportunity to come and relive their childhood memories,” Briana said about the event. 

GH4GU: Night at the Museum attendance helps support Gilbert House’s dedication to children’s education and exploration. Ticket proceeds fund future museum projects. 

“The more support we get, the more we can do, whether that’s a new exhibit or a new program,” Briana said. 

Not only do these events help the young people of Salem flourish, but they also allow adults the chance to return to their roots and be youthful again, something grown-ups aren’t always encouraged to do. 

“You’re allowed to be a kid here,” Briana said.

And sometimes that’s all we need.
