Salem Reads 2021 Title Announced

Salem Reads selects memoir about change, hope, friendship and a dog for February 2021 program.

Salem Reads, the community-wide reading project that invites everyone in Salem to read the same book, take part in discussions, and enjoy related programs, has announced its selection for 2021 — Walking with Peety: The Dog Who Saved My Life by Eric O’Grey.

Walking with Peety is Eric’s memoir about being unhealthy, stressed and receiving a doctor’s prescription to “go to the animal shelter and get a dog.” The dog Eric adopts changes both their lives; It’s a tale of mutual rescue, friendship and strength.

“The Salem Public Library Foundation Book Selection Committee meets each January and reviews book options keeping in mind program goals, selection criteria, and previous titles,” said Kate Van Ummersen, the Foundation’s executive director. “Library staff present the finalists for a vote by the public.”

There are a number of criteria a book must meet to be a potential Salem Reads selection including, but not limited to, appeal, readability, well-written and well-reviewed. The program also seeks literature that connects to an important social issue that generates discussion and interest, as well as themes that will contribute to multiple program possibilities.

“We are excited about all the programming possibilities — pet adoption, physical and mental wellness, activities like walking and bike riding,” Kate said.

“As we imagine the Salem Reads events for February 2021, we are planning for a fully virtual program, as well as our usual physical gatherings. This allows us to guarantee a successful program no matter what restrictions are in place for the pandemic.”

Salem Reads aims to foster a sense of community by bringing people together in person or virtually through reading, discussion and programs based on the themes of a common book.

Watch for a book giveaway coming in December 2020, along with a release of the event schedule.
