Here’s a look at what’s happening this February in Salem. And note, leap year means there’s one more day to fill with activities!

Fridays

Discover Chemeketa’s Planetarium — Although Oregon may not be in the path of the next “great American eclipse,” occurring on April 8, that shouldn’t stop you from exploring the night sky and you can do so through the Chemeketa Community College Planetarium Star show. The planetarium show, “Eclipse: The Sun Revealed,” will take you on a journey through the historical and cultural view of eclipses, the geometry that permits them to occur and safety hints on how to see the rare event. An introduction to the night sky over Salem highlighting activities for of season is included.
When: 7:30 p.m. Fridays Feb 2, 9, 16, 23 and Mar 1, 8, 15

February 1

Learn more about estate planning in this informal yet informative and entertaining presentation by Salem-based lawyer Eden Rose Brown. She’ll include topics such as wills vs trusts, when and how to create your estate plan, and how to talk with loved ones about your goals and wishes.

First Thursday Contra Dance — Salem Folklore Community hosts a night of called dances with live music. Beginner session for new dancers starts at 6 p.m. No partner needed. Masks are optional.

SALEM READS: Oil & Water: A Documentary — View a documentary about the efforts of two young men trying to conserve their cultures and environment in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Jordan Thewlis is stand-up comedian and writer based out of Los Angeles. He works as a Daily Contributor to The Onion, and is a Lead Producer for comedy’s fastest growing comedy brand Don’t Tell Comedy. His stand-up has been featured in SF Sketchfest, FEST in Gainesville, FL and Comic Con. Clips of his stand-up comedy have gone viral, totalling more than 20 million views across various social media platforms, allowing him to sell out clubs and theaters across the country.

SALEM READS: Seeking Our Roots: Why Do Genealogy? Join members of the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society to discuss the origins and value of researching our forebearers. Hosted by the Salem City Club. Register after January 22 through the Salem City Club website. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, February 2 in the Dye House at Willamette Heritage Center, 1313 Mill St. SE.


The First Friday Art Walk aims to promote local businesses, emerging artists and engagement with our downtown community. Taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, it is a free, leisurely opportunity to explore the heart of Salem and discover new shops, artwork, crafters and more. Each month includes a variety of businesses offering specials, art to view, activities and more. Reinforcing the encouragement of participation, there is also a raffle. To take part, pick up a passport from any of the participating businesses and collect stamps from a number of locations. Then turn in your completed passport to enter a raffle to win a prize (usually a basket overflowing with items from all the participating businesses). Eagle Eyes – Eagles tribute is a tribute to the legendary California country rock band. Audiences are mesmerized by this group of Vancouver, B.C. musicians’ precise vocal harmonies and service to the smallest of details in performing songs spanning the extensive Eagles’ Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame Career (including a few selections from Eagles’ solo careers!).

Chemeketa Cellars invites you to experience a taste of Australia in a class with winemaking instructor Johnny Brose which will showcase eight Australian wines and discuss individual producers as well as the climate, terroir, varietals, and winemaking techniques. This class is appropriate for all levels of wine enthusiasts, from beginners to aficionados, and is ideal for those wanting to learn more about Australian wines. Participants will be provided with oyster crackers and water for palate-cleansing; feel free to bring alternate crackers if you have special dietary needs. You may also want to bring a notebook and pen to take notes.

TJ is a Haitian stand-up comedian who is currently based in New York City. He has made appearances on Gotham Comedy Live (AXS TV) and Good Day New York (FOX5). TJ has a very laid-back, smooth, and conversational style. He jokes about race, society’s idiosyncrasies, and the inherent contrast between life in Haiti and America.

Syco Billy’s String Band is a bluegrass and Americana ensemble that tightly wraps the eclectic tastes of the members refined by decades of musical experience around a solid bluegrass core layered with honeyed strings and rich harmonies, 8 p.m. Friday, February 2 at Salem’s Historic Grand Theatre. February 3

An Evening with Crazy Train: Ozzy Osbourne & Black Sabbath Tribute — Crazy Train features the uncanny likeness of Tim Tugg, whose Ozzy persona has fooled even the most hard-core of Ozzy fans. His vocals and mannerisms emulate the Godfather of Heavy Metal with great detail and his band doesn’t miss a note either. Throw up your metal fingers and get WILD with Crazy Train.

Pentacle Theatre wraps Brighton Beach Memoirs. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene copes with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn, his formidable mother, his overworked father and his worldly older brother, Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche and her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. (Source: Concord Theatrical).

SALEM READS: Ecuadorian History Lecture — Delve into the interesting and complex history of Ecuador with Dr. Mariko Plescia, 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 7 in Loucks Auditorium.

Weaving Sovereignty: The Art of Ceremony in Indigenous Oregon — Rebecca Dobkins, curator of Indigenous art at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art (HFMA) and a professor emerita of anthropology at Willamette University, will give an illustrated lecture exploring how Indigenous customary practices of plant tending, harvesting, and weaving can contribute to broader conversations about art-making and tribal sovereignty in the Pacific Northwest. Dobkins curated The Art of Ceremony exhibition that took place in 2008 at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art and recently published The Art of Ceremony: Voices of Renewal from Indigenous Oregon, 7 to 8 p.m. Feb 8 at Willamette University in Paulus Lecture Hall, 245 Winter ST SE.


Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox is back. The Life In The Past Lane World Tour returns with a revamped show blending modern-day earworms and iconic pop hits with the original styles that put American popular music on the map: ragtime, swing, big band, country/western, doo wop and soul. Equal parts time-traveling musical variety show and career-launching talent platform, Postmodern Jukebox (or “PMJ”) will feature a cast of performers from their wildly popular YouTube channel, to bring the musical universe to life. Take a road trip to experience Life In The Past Lane. Dressing in vintage attire is encouraged.

February 9

Get out and dance at the Second Friday Céilí, featuring live music by Richie Rosencrans, Kate Gregory and Erik Killops and dances called by Sam Keator. No experience or partner is needed. There is a free dance lesson at 7:15 included with admission and live music from 8 to 11 p.m. If you can count to three and seven and move from place-to-place, this is for you. It’s a fun form of exercise. Bring water. Don’t like to dance? The music alone is worth every penny (and more!)

Oregon Symphony presents Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony — From its ominous opening — “Fate knocking at the door” — to the closing passages of radiant triumph, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony charts an exhilarating spiritual journey. Beethoven’s legacy looms in works by Carlos Simon and Timo Andres, whose Blind Banister reimagines the grace and wit of Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, 7:30 p.m. February 9 in Smith Auditorium, Willamette University, 270 Winter St SE. Artist Reception: Layered Impressions: Recent Paintings by Nancy Eng — Celebrate the most recent exhibition at Level 2 Gallery, paintings by Salem-based artist Nancy Eng. Nancy’s work is centered on two principal subjects: the landscape and the figure. “My paintings start from photos, sketches and memories, and change is an important aspect of my work. Each piece evolves from its original colors, composition and emotions, flowing through multiple layers to its final form.”
“As an artist born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, I draw from the nature surrounding me. This show is exclusively abstract landscapes, created entirely without brushes. I love to use unconventional tools – silicone scrapers, color shapers, spatulas, squeegees, rollers, credit cards, pallet knives and other things to spread layers of paint. These tools allow me to paint loose and abstract impressions.” Hosted light fare, cash wine/beer.

Rethinking Oregon Jewish Pioneers with Dr. Ellen Eisenberg — Western historians have long framed the high level of acceptance and inclusion experienced by early Jewish settlers in the region in celebratory terms. Yet over the last several years, this story has begun to shift, as tales of heroic pioneers have been called into question by narratives of settler colonialism, land theft and genocide. In this presentation, Eisenberg will explore the impact of these shifting historical narratives from the point of view of a western Jewish historian, sharing how she rethought, revised and reframed her own work on Oregon Jewish pioneers in response to recent racial reckonings in western history and society.

Oregon Quilt Festival is one of the largest quilt shows in the Pacific Northwest featuring more than 40 vendors, 300+ quilts on display and for sale, plus classes, special events and more.

Willamette University Theatre presents Too Much Light Makes the Baby GO BlindThe longest-running play in Chicago theatre history! Each performance is different, an ever-changing menu of 30 short plays, all chosen at random by the audience. Sometimes with pizza! Created by the Neo-Futurists, the show is “a fusion of sport, poetry and living-newspaper” that pits the artists against a 60-minute timer and the whims of the audience.

The Cherry City Classic is a multifaceted, family-friendly event centered around the art of the motorcycle and hotrod culture. Featuring an invitational custom motorcycle show, live music, moto-themed art, a tattoo expo, vendors and live motorcycle racing, the event is intended to provide entertainment to people of all ages and backgrounds. The show, vendors and music will be in the indoor, heated Jackman Long building, while the races will take place next door in a covered building.

Watercolors Made Easy: Mt. Hood with Trillium Lake — No drawing or painting experience is needed for this class. A line drawing of Mount Hood and Trillium Lake will be already on the watercolor paper and students only need to paint with watercolors. Masters of Hawaiian Music: George Kahumoku Jr., Tia Carrere, and Daniel Ho — Featured regularly at Maui’s renowned “Slack Key Show®”, this group shares the uniquely Hawaiian styles of slack key guitar, ‘ukulele, and songs both traditional and new. Their music’s origins reach back to the early 19th century when Portuguese immigrants brought the ‘ukulele and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to Hawai‘i along with their ranching knowledge. Since then, Hawaiians made these instruments their own and these dynamic musicians reflect the best of traditions, musical virtuosity, and sparkling compositions.

Hit Machine — Hit Machine is a band you and your guests will never forget. Created by Bart Hafeman, the energy projected from this 7 piece band is highly contagious to say the least. The band plays hits from all eras as it’s not uncommon to here Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees), Kiss (Prince), Dynamite (Taio Cruz), You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) all in the same set. The band has synchronized dance moves and many appropriate ways to involve the crowd in the performance to make it an unforgettable evening!
