Fiber, Fashion, and Fun Take the Spotlight at Artists in Action’s November Art Show
The opening night reception will take place during Salem’s First Friday Art Walk on November 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through November 28 at Elsinore Framing and Fine Art Gallery, 444 Ferry St. SE.
Artists in Action’s Fiber Arts Show will feature a broad range of artwork created with textile materials and techniques, including knitting, weaving, quilting, embroidery, macramé, felting, rug hooking, lace making, basketry, sewing, papermaking, and more. Fiber art uses natural or synthetic fibers and textiles to create expressive works of art. In recent decades, it has gained increasing recognition as a vital form of contemporary art, with artists expanding the possibilities of traditional techniques and materials.
Artists in Action is excited to offer this showcase opportunity to artists throughout Salem and across Oregon. The show is open to all Oregon visual artists, and AiA membership is not required. Artists may submit up to three works for consideration in the juried exhibition and up to four works for the Fashion Show.
The exhibition will be juried by award-winning two-dimensional textile artist Linda Jacobson. Known for her vibrant use of color, texture, and detail, Jacobson creates textile work inspired by the beauty,
complexity, and constant change found in nature. Ribbon and monetary awards will be presented in the following categories: Best of Show, Best Original Design, Best Wearable, Best Use of Unconventional Material, Best Use of Color, Most Functional Non-Wearable, Honorable Mention, and People’s Choice Award.

“Upcycled Creations” Fashion Show
As an optional feature of the exhibition, artists may participate in the “Upcycled Creations” Fashion Show, where they can model an outfit that was created using four pieces of used clothing based on the designated themes listed below. Artists may choose one theme or several as inspiration for their upcycled outfit, and are encouraged to embellish their creations with paint, dye, beads, thread, and other materials. The spirit of the event is playful, imaginative, and fun!
The finished outfits will be modeled on the runway for judging at Elsinore Framing/Gallery on Friday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m.
Fashion Show Outfit Themes
- Create an outfit for an interview for the job of your dreams—designed to express ambition, your personality, and style.
- Design an outfit for dinner with Liberace—bold, playful, glamorous, and dazzling.
- Design an outfit for a vacation in Iceland, the “Land of Fire and Ice” —inspired by contrast, landscape, texture and adventure.
- Design an outfit for attending a festival in Africa—celebrating color, movement, pattern, and creative possibility.
Artists should choose the theme that inspires their outfit and be prepared to share why they selected it and how they created their design. Applicants may submit more than one theme-based design, but only one outfit may be submitted for each theme, for a maximum of four Fashion Show submissions.
Fashion Show judging will be based on creativity and imagination, quality and craftsmanship, and color choices. Four prizes will be awarded: First Prize, $300; Second Prize, $150; Third Prize, $100; People’s Choice, $50.
Each outfit must be wearable and ready for the artist or a chosen model to present on the runway for judging on Friday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m. at Elsinore Framing/Gallery, 444 Ferry St. SE, Salem, OR.
The main objective: fun, fun, and more fun!
