Salem’s soulful son: Jon Fro

Salem musician and music producer Jon Fro hopes to find a national audience with his newly released single, “When You Come.” The song, and accompanying video, which was directed and shot by husband-wife team Mark and Nicole Pineda, hit Youtube in September. Other singles from his forthcoming album are scheduled to be released late next year.

“I still love releasing albums,” said Jon. “An album is an amazing piece of art.” 

Jon has been a staple in the local music scene for about 20 years and in Salem for 30. While his musical journey began creating hip-hop, he recently he has embraced a singer/songwriter sound. Still, Jon continues to produce rap and hip-hop as well as his own music through his production company Room 4 Productions, which is located in his home. This allows him the freedom to create without the financial and time constraints going elsewhere would require, he said. Jon keeps busy with a steady client base primarily from Salem and Portland. He hopes one day to record a hybrid album that incorporates a fusion of both styles: his hip-hop roots and his singer/songwriter sound. 

Jon writes all of his song lyrics and music. When asked how he finds inspiration, Jon shared he has written songs through all different creative avenues, but said: “I write things…organically, spontaneous. Sometimes I go in with a clear purpose, a chord that I like, a rhythm. I vibe on really what my guitar makes me feel. The song will stem from that. Sometimes I know immediately: this is it. Catching the moment and inspiration is where the true magic comes from.”

This fall, Jon will promote his new music by playing locally. In addition to his new album, he will also be releasing a Christmas song in December. Watch for and take in one of Jon’s shows Saturday, November 9, 2019, at The Triangle or Saturday, December 7, 2019, at Taproot Lounge and Cafe.
