Pentacle Theatre will hold open auditions for Catch Me If You Can

Directed at Pentacle Theatre by Wendy Boyack; Book by Terrence McNally – Score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman

When: 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 16

Where: Pentacle Theatre’s Downtown Rehearsal Studio at 197 Liberty St SE

CASTING CALL:

● We are looking to cast 20-30 actors/singers/dancers.

● This show is fairly complex, and character driven, rumored to be based on a true story. Dancers (male and female) plus ensemble are crucial to the overall fun and excitement the show creates.

● This is a period piece (late 1960s) so the look and feel of the show, along with the dance numbers will be reflective of the times.

THINGS TO KNOW:

● Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and open auditions for all roles begin promptly at 1 p.m. Please be on time and plan to stay through 6 p.m.

  • Vocals from 1-4
  • Dance from 4-6
  • The dance section may begin sooner depending on the number of people auditioning.
  • You may leave after you have completed both sections

● There will be 7 people on the audition board: Director, Assistant Director, Music Director, Choreographer, Board member, Stage Manager, Costumer.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 32 bars or 1 minute of a Broadway song in the style of the show.
  • Prefer NOT a song from the show
  • Bring a track – no auditions without accompaniment. You want to show your vocal talents and abilities. A Bluetooth speaker will be provided.
  • Bring clothing you are comfortable to move in
  • Bring shoes you can dance in
  • Dance will focus on the jazz, swing, burlesque styles of the 60s.
  • There will be a small section for tappers. There is one tap number in the show.

● Please arrive early to fill out an audition form. We encourage you to download the form at PentacleTheatre.org/auditions and complete it in advance. Please write clearly, especially your contact information. Headshots and resumes are not required but are always appreciated.

● Bring your calendar and provide a complete list of your conflicts through September 5, 2026. If you have a conflict with the audition date, please contact the director.

● Callbacks: will be May 17 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Pentacle downtown rehearsal space. Call backs will include:

  • Selections of music numbers
  • Reading
    • Read honestly. Trust your instincts. Look for something you can bring to the role
    • Do your research. These are real people. Try to get a feel for who these people are and what they want to achieve.
    • Don’t use an accent unless you are directed to during the auditions.
    • Sides and music do not need to be memorized.
    • If you are asked to come to callback, you will be provided a link to the sides and music cuts in an email.
  • Dance as needed

REHEARSALS:

● Generally, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays.

● The director will set weekend rehearsals and work sessions as needed. Please keep this in mind when providing your list of conflicts.

● Rehearsals will be scheduled to make the best use of everyone’s time. Cast members are required to attend every rehearsal once Catch Me If You Can moves into the theatre. If you have questions about rehearsals, please contact the director.

THE STORY:

Based on the hit film and the incredible true story, Catch Me If You Can is the high-flying musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught.

Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager, Frank Abagnale, Jr., runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer – living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. When Frank’s lies catch the attention of FBI agent, Carl Hanratty, though, Carl pursues Frank across the country to make him pay for his crimes.

THE CHARACTERS:

Casting actors able to play the following roles, genders and ages:

● Frank Jr – A young, handsome con artist. Grew up learning to disappear into another skin to avoid his problems. He will frequently play the “narrator.” Gender: male Age: 20-30 Vocal range G2-C5

● Carl Hanratty – An FBI agent leading the investigation and search for Frank Jr. A knowledgeable and habitual workaholic who idolizes the moment he catches his man. Gender: Male Age: 35-55 Vocal range G2-G4

● Frank Sr – Frank Jr’s father. He is an inspiration when it comes to swindling. Upbeat and fast-talking, he undergoes a series of progressive failures that leave him sad and alone. Gender: Male Age: 40-60 Vocal range F2-G4#

● Paula – Frank Jr’s beautiful mother. She met Frank Sr in France, during the war, but has become disillusioned. Caring and loving, with an underlying resentment toward her husband and son. May be asked to use a French accent. Gender: Female Age 40-60 Vocal range: A3-C5

● Brenda Strong – A young nurse and Frank Jrs eventual love interest. She is genuine and loving. Hardworking and initially insecure, she meets Frank Jr and comes to trust him but she eventually helps him find his heart and values. Gender: female Age 20-30 Vocal range G3-A5

● Carol Strong – Brenda’s traditional Southern mother. She is talkative and boisterous. May be double cast in ensemble roles Gender: female Age: 40-60 Vocal range: Bb3-A5

● Roger Strong – Brenda’s conservative and protective father. He is stern and interrogatory but reveals himself to be deeply romantic with strong family values. May be double cast in ensemble roles. Gender: Male Age 45-60 Vocal range: A2- A4

● FBI Team – Johnny Dollar, Tod Branton, Bill Cod

● Ensemble – Will be asked to play multiple characters
