The official start of summer in Salem is marked not just by the solstice, but even more so by Make Music Day, the annual citywide day of musical merriment that takes to the streets, parks, and public spaces from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on June 21.

 ‘Conduct Us’ — In memory of Make Music Salem Co-Founder Mark Green. Have you ever wanted to conduct an orchestra? Here’s your chance! Step onto the podium and take the baton as members of the Salem Orchestra perform under your direction. No experience is necessary—just enthusiasm and a willingness to take the lead! 2 to 3 p.m. corner of State & Liberty.
Singing in the Shower — Step into the spotlight and unleash your inner shower singer! Choose a song, grab a microphone, and sing your heart out! 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. corner of State & Liberty.Â
Air Guitar Contest — All you Rock Dads out there, turn up the imaginary amps and get ready to rock! Guitar shredders and hosts Todd & Rio, invite Dads (and anyone else) to come show off their best guitar solos, stage moves, and rock-star energy! Bring your (air) guitar or we’ll have one available for you! Prizes for best performance! 4 to 5 p.m. corner of State & Commercial.Â

Found Sound Alley – Discovery music items for kids (or any age) to try out, including jumbie jams, egg shakers, kazoos, rhythm sticks, buckets & drumsticks, and more! 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Wexford Alley (on Court Street between High and Liberty).
Bucket Drumming – Join Ms. Beats for an energetic bucket-drumming experience in Wexford Alley! Participants of all ages can grab a bucket and drumsticks and follow along as the group creates exciting rhythms together in unison. 1 to 2 p.m. Wexford Alley.Â
Ukulele Play-Along & Jam Session – For Father’s Day, bring your Dad to the fun and welcoming ukulele play-along for all ages and skill levels, led by Dan Miles! Bring your ukulele or we will have some available for you to use. All participants will be able to take home their song book! 3 to 4 p.m. Wexford Alley.Â
Harmonica Give-Away & Play-Along – Join us for a harmonica give-away and interactive play-along session led by Chris Estes! Participants will receive a harmonica (while supplies last) and learn the basics of playing simple melodies and rhythms together. 4 to 5 p.m.Wexford Alley.Â
