Gamay is a grape you should know.
As a relative of Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir originates in the same region in France where Pinot Noir thrives — Burgundy, and it grows well right here in our part of the Willamette Valley.
Gamay wine is made in two different styles: Beaujolais Nouveau and Noir. The Nouveau style is bright and fruity, sometimes a little like tart cherry. It is usually released in the third week of November as the first wine of the new harvest. Beaujolais Nouveau style Gamay is meant to drink right away in celebration of the harvest, so drink it soon after buying.
Gamay can also be oak-aged for a period of time similar to Pinot Noir, and it takes on some richer, smoother qualities and ages well. It smells fruity, flowery, and a little earthy. There are a few vineyards around Salem making lovely Gamay wines. Find both styles of Gamay at Stomp by Croft Vineyards, 5475 River Rd S. croftvineyards.com
