Here’s a look at what’s happening this month in Salem —
February 1-2
Salem Art Association presents An Evening with Hattitude: Hats from the Hatboxes of Willie Richardson. Black women wearing stunning “church hats” to express their respect for God, and their own “Hattitude” reaches back generations.
Willie Richardson passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. She was the Past President of Oregon Black Pioneers. She was a local leader who served on the Salem-Keizer School District’s Board of Directors from 1987 to 1991 and was an independent business owner from 1993 until 2010, when she chose to focus on OPB and organizing work.
In accordance with her family’s wishes, the (now full) February 2 special presentation will go on as planned, featuring a video segment of Willie introducing her world of hats, along with excerpts from the Oregon Black Pioneers play “Crowns,” followed by hat stories from a few of Salem’s well-known hat wearers.
But there are special extended hours 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 31 and Wed, Feb 1 to see Willie’s amazing show “Hattitude.” At 6:30 p.m. on both days, there will be a short program where we’ll share stories about Willie and her impact on SAA and the community. There will be an opportunity for you to share your stories about Willie, too.

Opening the show is internationally-touring, Grammy-nominated phenom Strangelove – The DEPECHE MODE Experience who deliver a pitch-perfect “best of” concert that transports the listener through time and touches on several key points in Depeche Mode’s 40+ year career. “They do it to such fine detail, it’s scary” — Martin Gore, Depeche Mode
