Salem audiences will have the opportunity to experience Columbia River Canoe Project, an inspiring adventure film. The documentary follows Robert Lester and his 18-year-old cousin Braxton Mitchell as they embark on an ambitious 1,300-mile canoe journey from the Continental Divide near Butte, Montana to the Pacific Ocean in Astoria, Oregon. Along the way, they navigate both the river’s challenges and their own personal growth. The film delivers a trek filled with breathtaking landscapes and unexpected obstacles and explores their trials and triumphs while raising awareness of the ecological challenges affecting the Columbia River Watershed.
"I have been blown away by the reactions of people at the showings we’ve had so far,” said Robert. “People are enjoying the Columbia River Canoe Project more than I ever could have hoped, and I’m just so honored to be able to share the inspirational characters and environmental lessons from my expedition with viewers."
Robert Lester grew up in the mountains outside of Butte Montana. From a young age, he had a love for the mountains and the outdoors. Skiing with his mother and going on adventures with his father as a child shaped his desires in life. As he got through grade school, he began working in the Biology Department of Montana Technological University, thanks to the mentorship of Dr. Marisa Pedulla. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree from MSU, Lester committed himself to being the best mountain athlete possible, pursuing a career as a professional skier, climber and mountaineer. He believes that the best way to protect the future is through the positive environmental impact while the greatest way to impact the future is to positively influence the next generation.
